Anita Görbicz’s name is synonymous with the club where she spent her entire career, Györi Audi ETO KC. The centre back became known as the Queen of Handball thanks to her record for club and country over more than 20 years.
Görbicz was spotted aged 10, and started out playing as much on the wing as in centre back, but she settled in the latter position thanks to her creativity and vision for the sport. After four years in the Györ youth team, she joined the senior ranks in 1997 and would be part of the club’s rise to the very top of domestic and European handball.
During Görbicz’s career, Györ won the Hungarian league 13 times and the Hungarian Cup 15 times. They also became the powerhouse of European club handball, first reaching the semi-finals of the EHF Champions League in 2007 before making their first final in 2012 and winning their first title in 2013. With Görbicz on board, Györ then won five EHF Champions League trophies, including a three-peat between 2017 and 2019. She would retire after the DELO EHF FINAL4 in 2021, when Györ finished third, beating CSKA Moscow in the placement game.
Görbicz featured in Hungary’s youth teams, winning silver at the 2001 Junior World Championship before debuting as a senior in 2002. With Hungary, she won World Championship silver in 2003 and bronze in 2005, as well as EHF EURO bronze in 2004 and 2012.
Görbicz’s individual titles are numerous. She was named IHF World Player of the Year in 2005 and was six times Hungarian Handballer of the Year. She was the All-star centre back of the World Championship four times, and top scorer of the EHF Champions League in 2012 and 2014. She scored well over 2,000 goals for her club and more than 1,000 for Hungary over the course of her career.
Since retirement, Görbicz has worked as Györ’s sports director.
