BIOGRAPHY
Born in Vigo, Spain, in 1980, Begona Fernandez developed into one of Spain’s best-ever handball players. The line player spent most of her club career in Spain, playing for sides including Elda Prestigio and Itxako, with whom she won the Spanish league five times running. Her career ended abroad, however, after two seasons with Macedonian side Vardar.
Fernandez also picked up the Cup Winners’ Cup trophy in 2000 with her first club, Milar L’Eliana, and the EHF Cup with Itxako in 2009.
For the Spanish team, Fernandez played a total of 181 games and scored 395 goals. She was Spain’s captain when they won bronze at the London 2012 Olympic Games, and scored five goals in their extra-time 31:29 victory against South Korea.
During her time with the squad Spain also won silver at the EHF EURO 2008 and bronze at the 2011 World Championship.
Fernandez was named All-star line player at the EHF EURO 2008 and 2009 World Championship.
