BIOGRAPHY
Carlos Prieto is perhaps not the most-garlanded of players in the Hall of Fame, but his impact was significant over many years as a player, and he continues to give back to handball through a number of initiatives aimed at young players.
Prieto started out at FC Barcelona, winning two EHF Champions League titles with the club as a young player before leaving the city for a series of other Spanish sides. He won a further Champions League trophy in 2006 with Ciudad Real.
The second half of Prieto’s career was outside Spain, with stays at clubs including Rhein-Neckar Löwen in Germany, Celje in Slovenia and Kadetten Schaffhausen in Switzerland. He finished his professional career with three years at Bundesliga side HSG Wetzlar.
For Spain, Prieto played a total of 96 international matches - including appearances at all major tournaments - scoring 111 goals. He won bronze at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, scoring seven times in the bronze medal match against Croatia.
After retirement, Prieto set up non-profit organisation ‘Athletes Inspire Children’, which is aimed at inspiring children through mentorships with athletes. Prieto also acts as a Respect Your Talent ambassador and is heavily involved in grassroots handball.
