Gro Hammersing-Edin was born into a sport-loving family in the small town of Gjøvik, close to Norway’s capital, Oslo. She fell in love with handball aged 10 and played for a few youth teams before turning professional with Vardal HK in 1997.
That same year, she was called up to Norway’s national youth team for the first time, where her leadership qualities were evident, as she was soon named captain of the age-group sides, before receiving her first senior Norway call-up, aged just 20, in 2000, before taking the senior captaincy in 2003.
After securing two silver medals with her in the side, Norway went from strength to strength under Hammering-Edin’s leadership; winning three EHF EURO titles and the Olympic gold medal in 2008, before she retired from the national team in 2010.
A decade on from her professional club debut, she was named IHF World Player of the Year, as Norway were runners up at the 2007 World Championship.
At club level, her exploits earned a move to Denmark with FC Midtjylland Håndbold in 2003, where she won the Cup Winners’ Cup in 2004. It was there where she met her future wife, teammate Anja Edin. The couple now have two children.
2010 saw her return to her homeland with Larvik, with whom she spent seven years, winning the Norwegian title in each. The crowning moment came in 2011, when Larvik won the EHF Champions League, the first Norwegian club to take the title.
