BIOGRAPHY
Stephanie Cano was born in Bordeaux in 1974 and was a fairly late convert to handball, so she probably did not expect to become captain of her national team in the early 2000s. As France captain, she led her side to bronze at both the 2002 and 2006 EHF EUROs, but the crowning moment came in 2003, as France became world champions in Croatia.
She became a regular in the French team in the 1990s after making her debut in 1993, and was part of the squad which won silver at the 1999 World Championships, while she participated in three Olympic Games.
After many years with Mérignac, she left France in 2002 to embark on three seasons with three different clubs. In the first of those, she became the first Frenchwoman to play in the EHF Champions League final, with Spanish side Mar Valencia, before becoming the first Frenchwoman to win the competition a year later, with Denmark’s Slagelse FH.
Caro returned to Valencia with Elda Prestigo, before heading back to France to join CA Béglais, with whom she ended her career, while also completing physiotherapy qualifications.
