BIOGRAPHY
Although he was born and raised in Sweden, Tomas Svensson spent the bulk of his professional handball career in Spain - and he is currently working as goalkeeper coach at Barça, one of the many clubs he represented during his active career.
Svensson started out at his local club, Eskilstuna Guif, in Sweden, but at the age of 22 was scouted by Atlético Madrid. That was the start of 12 years in Spain, for Madrid, Bidasoa and Barcelona; after three years in Hamburg, Svensson returned to Spain for another six years with Portland San Antonio and Valladolid. He ended his career in 2012 after a season with Rhein-Neckar Löwen.
During his club career, Svensson won six consecutive EHF Champions League titles - starting out with Bidasoa in 1995, and then winning five trophies in a row with Barcelona.
Svensson gained his first national team cap in 1988 and two years later won his first international title at the 1990 IHF Men’s World Championship. He would go on to win another world championship title, in 1999, as well as three EHF EUROs. Olympic gold eluded Sweden while Svensson was active, but he did win three consecutive Olympic silver medals.
Over the course of his career, Svensson played 327 games for Sweden.
In his last year as a player and since retirement Svensson has taken on a series of coaching roles, predominantly as goalkeeping coach for sides including Rhein-Neckar Löwen and SC Magdeburg, and the Danish and Icelandic national teams.
